Shot of the day: Omega 166.0072 Memomatic

Posted by

This one is one of my more recent catches, the Omega reference 166.0072 Memomatic. A watch I have been thinking about adding for many years but never got to it…

From the looks, it’s a perfect watch for me – Funky 70’s, big and bulky, some colour on the dial and alarm, very much my taste… But something always came inbetween…

Inspired by my friend jml_watches I recently started to look again for this watch…

And finally found my Memomatic!

Omega – 166.0072 Memomatic

The Memomatic was introduced in 1969 but I have not been able to identify for how long it was in the catalogue, in 1975 it still was…

Several different case and dial version existed, the 166.0072 is the more square version. Existed both in stainless steel and in gold. Dials in silver, grey/blue, blue/silver, gold…. Same trap as with Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox, so many versions…

Omega – early 1970’s Spanish catalogue

As I have pointed out earlier, many brands follow each other in style and/or complications.

Here is a typical example: on the left – the Girard-Perregaux Deep Diver, on the right – the Omega Memomatic.

Case shape and style are very similar, both watches from the same the same time period, late 1960’s to mid 1970’s.

OK, not the same complications, one with internal rotating bezel and one with an alarm, but similar in style.

On the wrist, the Memomatic is as good as I always thought, maybe even better!

Will return with a more detailed report on the watch once the honeymoon period has settled… Stay tuned!
